Skin lightening has gained enormous popularity in recent years. The first thing that comes into most peoples minds when you mention this topic, is people like the late Michael Jackson who want to lighten their overall skin tone by several shades. That type of skin whitening is only the tip of the iceberg. In fact there are far many more people who are interested in skin lightening for other reasons. Most people are more interested in spot lightening problem areas, whether it be brown marks caused by sun damage such as age spots or freckles, or problems caused by hormonal issues such as melasma or post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Melasma commonly occurs during or after pregnancy, due to all the hormonal changes and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the medical name given to the scarring that occurs in connection with inflammatory skin problems such as acne. Another area of spot skin lightening that has grown tremendously over the last decade and especially so in the last few years, is that of intimate area lightening and in particular anal bleaching. Both vagina and anus bleaching have become a more mainstream practice as pornography has become more readily available and acceptable with the general public. Intimate area skin bleaching has been popular with adult film actors and actresses for many years and now it appears that many everyday people want to emulate this look themselves. The subject of intimate area bleaching has also come up in mainstream movies and tv shows in recent years, with mentions in reality shows such as the Kardashians and Geordie Shore and a hilarious scene in the movie Bridesmaids. It's interesting how a craze can take off and suddenly lots of people start thinking that this is something they need to do. While a lot of people will feel that this is quite a bizarre and unnecessary practice, there are many others who take it very seriously and feel like it is something they must do to feel good about themselves. When you think about it, people do all kinds of things to their appearance for all sorts of reasons... from wanting to feel better about themselves, to wanting to fit in with others or to attract attention from admirers, the list goes on and on. We pierce, tattoo, dye, nip, tuck, lift, enhance, tan, lighten and on and on it goes. It seems we are seldom just happy, with the way we are.

When you have skin discolorations and imperfections, your natural inclination may be to choose a skin lightening or bleaching product that promises to even out the flaws and leave you looking radiant and stunning.
However, not all of these products are created equal. Some use hazardous or even banned ingredients that could cause you more harm than good as you attempt to banish those unsightly dark marks and spots. It is important to become aware of the more common banned and questionable ingredients to make sure that when you choose a skin lightening product, you’re putting yourself on the path toward a healthier and more even looking complexion, and not a list of potential side effects. Two ingredients that are still used in many different skin products that you need to be particularly wary of are hydroquinone and steroids. Hydroquinone – the hazards relating to this lightening ingredient have been widely publicized, and yet it is still used in formulations from many countries around the world. It is still legal to purchase over the counter creams in concentrations of up to 2 percent and prescription products with concentrations of up to 4 percent in the United States. Many other countries, such as Canada, have been quick to ban or highly restrict the use of this substance. This is because its benefits for fading dark spots are inconsistent and this ingredient is a known carcinogen. It can also cause a condition called Ochronosis, when used over extended periods of time. This causes thick blackish blue patches on the skin that look far worse than the dark spots or freckles you were trying to remove. Steroids – topical corticosteroids (for example, hydrocortisone) can provide a rapid temporary whitening effect, but it is not safe to use these products over prolonged periods. It is illegal in the United States to sell this ingredient specifically for skin lightening, as it is considered only a side effect in treatments for conditions such as eczema or dermatitis. The use of this ingredient can lead to thin, fragile skin, excessive hair growth, fungal and bacterial infections, and irritation. Fortunately nowadays, there are many highly effective skin lighteners that use only safe and natural ingredients. It is important to stick with these types of products when choosing a skin lightener. It is especially important to choose a lightening cream made from safe ingredients, when performing any sort of intimate area lightening such as anal bleaching. The best products for whitening intimate areas are those made from entirely natural plant based ingredients.
